The Technology

How Liquid Active Armour® works.

Liquid Active Armour® is a proprietary, NSF-certified blended-phosphate treatment that does two jobs at once: it keeps scale-forming minerals dissolved so they never deposit, and it lays down a protective film that shields metal from corrosion. Here's the chemistry — the parts we can talk about.

Boundary-zone inhibition

Scale never forms, because minerals never get the chance to stick.

Active Armour® is not a water softener — it doesn't remove hardness minerals. It acts as a boundary-zone inhibitor: it prevents hardness compounds from sticking to themselves or to anything else to form scale. The minerals stay in solution and flow harmlessly through the system.

  • Keeps minerals dissolved. Calcium and magnesium carbonate, stubborn calcium sulfate, and dissolved iron, copper and zinc are held in solution instead of depositing on pipe walls and heat-transfer surfaces.
  • Protects metal from corrosion. The chemistry bonds to exposed metal in piping, water heaters, boilers and equipment, forming a protective nanolayer between the water and the surface.
  • Progressively descales. On systems that already carry deposits, LAA works existing carbonate, sulfate and iron scale back into solution over time — restoring flow and heat transfer without acid cleaning.
  • Stable across the working range. The proprietary formulation functions uniformly from 40°F to 140°F instead of breaking down the way many other phosphate compounds do.

Proven chemistry, engineered blend

Built on ~70 years of municipal water treatment

Phosphate treatment isn't experimental — it's one of the few substances recognized as safe to add to drinking water, used in US municipal, commercial and residential systems for almost 70 years. Roughly half of US water utilities use phosphates to control pipe corrosion, many since the EPA Lead and Copper Rule.

An engineered blend, not a commodity

Different phosphate chemistries do different jobs — orthophosphates inhibit corrosion, polyphosphates sequester scale and discoloration, blends do both. Liquid Active Armour® is a proprietary blend of four food-grade phosphate compounds engineered for scale and corrosion control together.

Matched to your water

Multiple Active Armour formulas are NSF-listed to match different water chemistries — hardness, sulfate, iron and manganese levels all factor in. We select the formulation and program from your actual water analysis, not a one-size drum.

What it handles

Know your deposit — because they don't behave alike

Boiler and infrastructure deposits form when feed-water impurities precipitate onto hot surfaces or settle and bake on. Scale insulates: even a thin layer forces equipment to burn more fuel, creates hot spots, and can eventually overheat a tube. The common deposit families:

DepositWhat it's likeLAA?
Calcium/magnesium carbonateGranular, often porous; fizzes CO₂ in acidPrevented & descaled
Calcium sulfate (gypsum)Much harder and denser than carbonate; bonds to almost any surface — even PVCPrevented & descaled
Iron oxideDark, usually magnetic; stains and foulsPrevented & descaled
SilicaExtremely hard, porcelain-like, acid-insolubleNeeds dedicated silica treatment — we design it alongside LAA

Calcium sulfate is the one that surprises facility teams — a water softener doesn't stop it, and conventional treatments weren't designed for it. It's a big part of why we lead with LAA. See what we pull out of untreated systems →

Safety & handling

Safe enough for drinking water — by design.

  • Food-grade compounds. The blend is built from food-grade phosphates — the same family of FDA-approved compounds used every day in common foods and beverages. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient.
  • Tiny doses. Treatment adds on the order of single-digit parts per million, well under the recommended 13 ppm maximum for water treatment. For perspective, the US EPA notes you'd have to drink 10–15 liters of treated water to equal the phosphate in a single can of soda.
  • Not an acid. The treatment works at neutral pH — it prevents and removes scale without acid cleaning, and it's neither flammable nor combustible. Clear, low-odor; SDS available on request.
  • Facility-friendly. No salt, no brine discharge, no wastewater stream — and secondary benefits facilities commonly see include reduced staining, better valve operation, improved meter accuracy and fewer complaint calls.
Chemistry + control

The chemistry is half the system. Dosing is the other half.

LAA performs when it's dosed in proportion to your real water use — which is why every Scale Kings install pairs the chemistry with metered smart injection: an ultrasonic flow meter, a precision pump, tank-level sensing, and 24/7 monitoring. Our team engineers the dosing program from your water analysis and your system.
